Why Jensen Huang Joined Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management Advisory Board

According to reports from the Financial Times and Reuters, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has accepted an invitation to join the Advisory Committee of Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management.

The committee, established in October 2000, aims to strengthen the school's connections with external stakeholders, improve research and teaching quality, and help the school become a world‑class economics and management institution. It is regarded as one of the most influential bridges between Chinese academia and top global business executives.

Each October the committee holds an annual meeting in Beijing to discuss education, technology, global economic development, the school's progress, and strategic challenges such as international cooperation, faculty development, and research institute establishment. For multinational executives, the committee provides a unique platform for long‑term, informal communication with Chinese policy makers and scholars.

The committee’s substantive advice includes promoting collaborations with world‑renowned business schools, recruiting international scholars, and establishing research institutes, thereby supporting the school's internationalization.

Current members are mostly chairs of internationally renowned corporations, deans of top university business schools, and Nobel laureates in economics. The chair of the committee is Apple CEO Tim Cook, and other members include Elon Musk, Satya Nadella, Mark Zuckerberg, and Masayoshi Son.

Just before the news broke, Huang joined a Chinese delegation in mid‑May and, shortly after the visit, the announcement of his appointment was made.

As the head of the world’s most valuable chip maker, Huang sits at the center of U.S.–China technology competition. Recent U.S. export restrictions on advanced AI chips have hampered Nvidia’s business. Analysts suggest that by joining the advisory committee, Huang can comply with U.S. export laws while using the high‑level academic‑business platform to maintain and deepen contacts with China’s academic, tech, and commercial decision‑makers.

The move also benefits Nvidia’s future talent recruitment and academic collaborations.

Earlier this month, Huang received an honorary Doctor of Science and Technology degree from Carnegie Mellon University, with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger presenting the diploma.

During the ceremony, Gelsinger highlighted a “heavy‑weight” cooperation between Intel and Nvidia, stating that the two companies are jointly developing exciting new products.

Overall, Nvidia’s $5 trillion market‑cap is not the endpoint; the company continues to expand its AI portfolio worldwide.
