What Makes TOGAF 10 a Valuable Contribution
TOGAF 10 reorganizes and modularizes its content into six core documents and 23 guidebooks, updates key topics like data management, agility, resilience, and the glossary, and aims to address past criticisms by improving readability, relevance, and update frequency for enterprise architects.
TOGAF 10 has been released, featuring major changes such as a restructured content layout that makes it easier to understand, reduces inconsistencies, and eliminates duplication.
Modularization has also progressed: six separate documents now constitute the core TOGAF content, complemented by 23 guidebooks in the TOGAF series, allowing easier reuse, modification, and rapid addition of new material, similar to micro‑service architecture.
TOGAF standards now formally include the series guides added to the library over recent years. Although this initially seems a minor change, it shortens the publication and update cycle of the standard, a trend the Open Group intends to continue.
The new version also provides updated and more detailed views on central topics such as information and master data management, agility, resilience, and adaptability.
Importantly, the TOGAF glossary has been updated with added, changed, or removed definitions.
Why is a new TOGAF Version 10 needed?
A major criticism of TOGAF has been its outdated content, especially regarding digital transformation, cloud computing, and agile topics that were addressed from a decade‑old perspective.
Additionally, the standard has been hard to read, overly long, and structurally monolithic. While TOGAF 9.2 saw little change, the series guides introduced newer, more modern content now housed in The Open Group Library, making the resources more relevant as inputs for architecture work.
It is encouraging to see The Open Group address many of these criticisms in version 10.
How does TOGAF 10 change the relevance of the TOGAF standard?
I have analyzed TOGAF 9.2’s relevance in other articles, finding a mixed picture: some aspects are outdated, while others remain relevant.
Basic TOGAF Content
The parts that remain relevant today are mainly the core architecture method, framework, meta‑model, and governance. Reviewing the basics shows they constitute the largest portion of the new version.
TOGAF 10 Certification
Regarding the signal sent by TOGAF 10 certification, I see no change; holding a TOGAF certification continues to be highly beneficial for enterprise architects seeking new opportunities, and the new version does not make it better or worse.
TOGAF 10 Content Updates
The new version updates many previously outdated sections, such as those on digital topics and agility, each now having dedicated guidebooks. Additional sections or descriptions have been added for privacy, architecture services, alternative architectures, and business scenarios.
The glossary updates are especially valuable, providing consistent definitions that benefit organizations even if they do not strictly follow the TOGAF standard, aligning them with today’s IT environment.
Business and IT Audiences in TOGAF 10
The new version explicitly defines the audiences for the TOGAF standard, tailoring content experiences for enterprise architects, team leaders, and team sponsors—a sensible move as architecture becomes more prevalent across organizations and stakeholders.
Is TOGAF 10 Worth It?
Naturally, the new version does not fully satisfy all my ideas and improvement wishes; for example, the Architecture Development Method (ADM) still retains the same phases and does not reflect current priorities in security and data architecture, and I would like to see greater business stakeholder involvement.
Nevertheless, the new TOGAF version leaves a very positive impression. Many shortcomings and criticisms have been addressed, making TOGAF a more understandable, compatible framework supported by comprehensive documentation, thereby increasing its relevance and value.
The new version adds value by making content easier to locate, simplifying the application of the framework’s parts, and enabling more frequent updates through its new structure.
