What China Mobile Learned from Passing DevOps Level‑3: Insights from the 2021 GOPS Conference

Conference Overview

On May 21‑22, 2021 the 16th GOPS Global Operations Conference was held in Shenzhen, gathering experts from major enterprises such as China Bank, Tencent, JD.com and Alibaba to share advanced operations practices.

DevOps Assessment Announcement

The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology released the results of the 12th batch of DevOps standard continuous delivery assessments, awarding certificates to participating enterprises.

Interview with China Mobile

Qian Ling, chief scientist of China Mobile and head of the Cloud Capability Center, explained how the company transformed its cloud capability center after 2019, moving from a development‑center model to an integrated operation, construction, maintenance and support model to provide reliable public cloud services.

He described the difficulty of passing the DevOps Level‑3 continuous delivery assessment, noting that unlike CMMI, DevOps combines tools, processes and governance. After a year of building a dedicated toolchain, more than 200 products achieved top‑industry rankings.

Key benefits included a ten‑fold increase in release efficiency, adoption of blue‑green deployment for large platforms and gray‑scale deployment for smaller ones, and a shift from fragmented toolchains to an integrated system.

Future Plans

China Mobile aims to extend the successful practices to other applications, strengthen SRE collaboration, and advance DevSecOps standards.

Community Suggestions

Qian emphasized the importance of community exchanges, online events, and sharing best practices from leading enterprises.
