WAIC 2022: AI Open Source and Industrial Intelligence Summit Highlights China's AI Ecosystem Development
At the WAIC 2022 AI Open Source and Industrial Intelligence Summit in Shanghai, Baidu’s CTO outlined a TSMC‑like model for large‑scale AI, academicians highlighted intelligent vehicle connectivity and open‑source leadership, a new deep‑learning transformation base was unveiled, and PaddlePaddle’s 4.77 million developers underscored China’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem across industry.
On September 1, 2022, the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) opened in Shanghai. The "AI Open Source and Industrial Intelligence Summit," hosted by the National Engineering Research Center for Deep Learning Technology and Applications and organized by Baidu, brought together top academicians and experts from China and abroad, along with enterprise guests from industrial, financial, pharmaceutical, and sports sectors.
Wang Haifeng, Baidu's Chief Technology Officer and Director of the National Engineering Research Center, proposed that the industrial model for large models would follow a "TSMC-like" pattern. He stated that large models combined with deep learning platforms can贯通 the entire AI industry chain from hardware adaptation, model training, and inference deployment to scenario applications, serving as the foundation for industrial intelligence.
Academician He Jifeng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences discussed "Intelligent Road-Vehicle Connectivity Technology and Industry Prospects," emphasizing that intelligent road-vehicle connectivity should leverage the city's "new infrastructure" and "digital foundation" to combine dynamic and static data, bridging data silos and enriching scenario-based applications.
Academician Wang Huaimin from the Chinese Academy of Sciences addressed "China's Open Source Innovation Development Trend," noting that open source has become an important model for technological innovation, driving IT and other industries' development. China's open source is transitioning from "comprehensive participation and integration" to "building momentum for leadership."
The summit also witnessed the unveiling of the Technology Achievement Transformation Base of the National Engineering Research Center for Deep Learning Technology and Applications. Representatives from NI, Roche China, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, and the National Sports Administration shared AI applications in industrial measurement, drug R&D, smart finance, and smart sports.
PaddlePaddle, China's first self-developed, feature-rich, open-source industrial-grade deep learning platform, has attracted 4.77 million developers and served 180,000 enterprises as of May 2022, ranking first in China's deep learning platform market share.
