Vivo Wins National Science and Technology Progress Award for 5G Technology

Vivo’s Communications Research Institute earned the 2023 National Science and Technology Progress Award’s first‑prize for its groundbreaking 5G work, including standards development, verification, testing, product R&D and promotion, backed by over 6,000 patents, 16,000 technical papers, multiple 5G/6G prototypes and influential white papers.

Vivo Wins National Science and Technology Progress Award for 5G Technology

On June 24, 2024, the 2023 National Science and Technology Awards were announced in Beijing. This year, 139 National Science and Technology Progress Awards were unveiled, including 3 special prizes, 16 first prizes, and 120 second prizes.

The project "Key Technologies and Engineering Applications of 5th Generation Mobile Communication System (5G)" nominated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology won the first prize of the 2023 National Science and Technology Progress Award. Vivo (Vivo Mobile Communications Co., Ltd.) received the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for its achievements and contributions in 5G technology standards, technical verification and testing, standard promotion, product R&D, and application promotion.

As a core component of Vivo's communications track, Vivo Communications Research Institute was established in 2016. It is responsible for cutting-edge technology research, international standard development, core technology verification and testing, industry standard formulation, and industrial promotion for Vivo Group's mobile communication technology. Although established only 8 years ago, it has accumulated over 6,000 5G and 6G technology invention patents, submitted over 16,000 technical papers to international standardization organizations, successfully promoted multiple technical projects such as terminal power saving, Multi-SIM, LP-WUS, and narrowband voice satellite communication in 3GPP, produced more than a dozen 5.5G and 6G prototype machines including NTN, RedCap, AI+communication, 6G mobile computing network integration, 6G communication sensing integration, 6G data plane, and 6GBackscatter, published 6 6G white papers, and published 3 technical monographs with People's Posts and Telecommunications Press. It has become one of the strongest companies in terms of technical capabilities, the most comprehensive technical system, and the strongest international standard promotion power in the domestic mobile communication standardization field.
