Tencent Donates TencentOS tiny and TKEStack to OpenAtom Open Source Foundation

On October 15th, Tencent officially announced the donation of two major open source projects—the lightweight IoT real-time operating system TencentOS tiny and the enterprise-level container orchestration engine TKEStack—to the OpenAtom Open Source Foundation. These projects will be incubated within the Foundation, developing through open governance to connect with a richer open source ecosystem and create open source benchmarks in cloud native and IoT domains together with developers worldwide.

The OpenAtom Open Source Foundation is a global non-profit organization dedicated to the open source industry, and is China's first and only foundation focused on open source themes.

Wang Juhong, Vice Chairman of the Foundation and Senior Vice President of Tencent, stated that open source is playing an increasingly important role in technology development and innovation. Tencent looks forward to working with the Foundation and developers to promote open source technology and open ecosystem development.

The two donated projects focus on the hottest cloud native and IoT technology areas. Since their open source announcement, they have garnered significant developer attention and code contributions, and have been deployed in multiple enterprise applications.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China's IoT industry is planned to reach 1.5 trillion yuan by 2020. Massive low-power IoT terminal nodes have become a crucial component in the IoT ecosystem. TencentOS tiny is a real-time operating system specifically designed for lightweight IoT scenarios, solving the "critical last mile" for IoT device cloud connectivity. It helps IoT developers more conveniently access massive cloud computing resources, storage, and advanced AI and big data algorithm models.

Compared to other similar technologies in the market, TencentOS tiny is highly competitive in terms of resource usage, device cost, power consumption management, and security stability, while enabling IoT terminal device interoperability.

Last September, TencentOS tiny was officially open sourced and within one week ranked 2nd on GitHub's trending projects list, receiving significant industry attention.

TKEStack is Tencent's open source enterprise-level container service platform. Container technology is a hallmark of cloud native. As early as 2009, Tencent began investing in container technology, accumulating extensive container usage experience through Torca and Gaiastack. With the development of the Kubernetes community and increasing user demand for containers, Tencent began offering Kubernetes-based container services (TKE) on its public cloud. Subsequently, Tencent integrated its experience and improvements to form TKEStack, a container private cloud solution, which was open sourced at the 2019 Tencent Techo Developer Conference.

TKEStack combines ease of use and scalability, integrating Tencent's years of experience in container technology and massive business operations. It also features Tencent's innovative GPU virtualization technology, providing the community and ecosystem with powerful scheduling capabilities, rich features, and stable container services. Developers and users can directly use it as a business platform or further customize functionality using cloud native approaches.

Open source foundations serve as "connectors" and "incubation pools" for open source projects, providing richer resource connections and more standardized code governance, offering continuous momentum for healthy project development.

It is expected that Tencent's two donated projects, under the operation of the OpenAtom Open Source Foundation, will attract more developers to participate, further reduce barriers to IoT and cloud native underlying technologies, accelerate application R&D efficiency, establish industry standards, and inject new vitality into related domestic industry development.
