Tencent Cloud Enables 5G Ultra-HD Live Streaming for Korean Baseball League with 8K/16K Multi-Tile Encoding

Tencent Cloud, together with CUDO Communications and Intel, is using its Extreme HD 2.0 multi‑tile encoding to stream 8K/16K ultra‑HD Korean Baseball League games over South Korea’s new 5G network, enabling independent tile decoding, high frame rates, and zoom‑in detail while preserving bandwidth and picture quality.

Tencent Cloud Enables 5G Ultra-HD Live Streaming for Korean Baseball League with 8K/16K Multi-Tile Encoding

Tencent Cloud, in partnership with Korean CUDO Communications Research Institute and Intel, has launched a tile-based viewport streaming service that has passed testing. South Korea's latest 5G network will leverage Tencent Ming Mou - Extreme HD 2.0 and Tencent Cloud's live streaming capabilities to deliver 8K/16K ultra-high-definition live broadcasts of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) games.

Sports events like baseball have two major requirements for live streaming: first, ultra-wide viewing angles requiring 8K or higher resolution sources, along with high dynamic range and wide color gamut for improved picture quality; second, the ability to show detailed close-up shots such as the moment a baseball is released, allowing users to zoom in on specific moments while maintaining 8K/16K quality.

To meet these requirements, Tencent Ming Mou Extreme HD performed extensive optimizations at the video encoding level, including multi-tile grid encoding. Under 7680x3840 resolution, multi-tile grid encoding can achieve 60x30=1800 tiles, with each tile independently containing slice_header information for independent NAL packaging and individual addressable decoding. Each tile uses Constrained Motion Vector mode where motion compensation does not cross tile boundaries. This approach enhances concurrent processing capabilities without introducing new error propagation, while allowing users to zoom into specific tile regions while still enjoying 8K/16K high-quality viewing experience.

Tencent Ming Mou is Tencent's audio-video AI product solution that can recognize video streams in real-time and perform AI processing to effectively save bandwidth resources and improve user experience. The Extreme HD feature offers intelligent dynamic encoding based on industry-leading audio-video encoding, deep learning image processing, quality enhancement, and ROI region encoding technologies.

The upgraded Extreme HD 2.0 targets high frame rate (60fps+), high bitrate (10Mbps+), and 4K/8K/16K live streaming and video-on-demand scenarios, with improved video encoding algorithms, engineering framework optimizations, and preprocessing enhancements.

Tencent Cloud's Extreme HD technology was previously applied during the 2018 World Cup broadcasts, where after dozens of service upgrades and extensive testing, it was selected by China Central Television (CCTV) as their technical partner. During the World Cup opening match, the technology impressed viewers with video quality and smoothness.

With the rollout of 5G licenses in China, consumer demand for ultra-high-definition video will continue to grow. This partnership marks Tencent Cloud's first implementation of end-to-end optimization for 8K/16K ultra-high-definition video encoding, CDN transmission, and decoding playback under overseas 5G network environments.
