Satya Nadella Highlights AI's Transformative Role, Echoing Bill Gates' 1995 Internet Memo

In 1995, Bill Gates issued a memo stating that the Internet was critical to every Microsoft business; today, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says he shares that view and believes artificial intelligence will have an equally profound impact.

This week, Nadella sat down with OpenAI founder and journalist Emily Chang. Nadella remarked, "I share Bill's 1995 memo view. Today AI is equally important, with the same significance as the Internet."

Microsoft is undergoing a transformation closely tied to the startup OpenAI. OpenAI's ChatGPT sparked a wave of generative AI excitement, prompting Microsoft to pledge a $13 billion investment.

Just as Netscape inspired Gates' original memo, OpenAI's creation and Microsoft's support are partly driven by concerns over Google’s dominance in the AI market.

Both ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing chatbot are built on transformer architectures, a technology originally invented by Google. Although Google remains a strong competitor, Microsoft and OpenAI are viewed as early leaders in the field.

After Gates’ memo, Microsoft’s web browser pushed Netscape out of the market, leading to a major antitrust lawsuit by the U.S. government.

In the AI arena, OpenAI co‑founder Sam Altman says the company’s position is far from settled, noting that the market is not only competitive but may be the most fiercely contested.

Microsoft’s spokesperson stated the company is eager to engage with governments worldwide to ensure fair competition in the AI market, while Nadella added that the true impact of AI remains to be seen.

He concluded, "Our motivation is to use this technology to achieve the goals of technology professionals and make it easier for people to access it."
