Renmin University Student Data Breach and the Hacker's Background

Yesterday a hot search revealed that Renmin University's official website had been hacked, resulting in the theft of large amounts of student data including photos, names, hometowns, and birthdays.

The stolen information was posted on a website organized as a "beauty ranking" list, drawing public attention for an entire day.

Police in Haidian District responded quickly, and the suspect, identified as Ma, a former master's student of the university's Artificial Intelligence Institute who graduated in 2022, was placed under criminal detention.

Ma's background includes multiple offers from major internet companies, internships at Huawei and ByteDance, and a current position in Tencent's WeChat search algorithm team, as well as a history of publishing controversial code on GitHub.

Legal experts from China University of Political Science and Law emphasized that the secondary processing of personal data for beauty rankings constitutes a severe violation of personal reputation and human rights.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting personal privacy and strengthening information security measures.
