In large‑scale software development teams, most design, development, and testing tasks are planned and deterministic, but many unplanned random events—such as urgent defect fixes, integration build failures, emergency requirement changes, security or performance issues discovered during trial runs, and severe customer complaints—seriously disrupt the development rhythm.

These random events accumulate over time, greatly affecting project schedule and quality, and must not be underestimated.

The article uses the familiar analogy of a coin‑toss to illustrate random events. In statistics, a coin‑toss is a random process that generates a sequence of random variables. Tossing a fair coin 1,000 times and plotting the cumulative sum (adding 1 for heads, subtracting 1 for tails) shows that the cumulative value tends to drift away from zero as the number of trials increases.

Although the probability of heads is 50%, the actual cumulative result deviates significantly from the expected zero, demonstrating that the variance of the cumulative sum grows with the number of trials. To mitigate queue‑related problems, the article suggests limiting Work‑In‑Process (WIP) by setting a maximum queue length and intervening promptly when the limit is approached. This aligns with lean Kanban principles, where constraining WIP and frequent monitoring reduce the impact of random events on project flow.
