Overview of Rancher: Open‑Source Platform for Docker and Kubernetes Management

Rancher is an open‑source software platform for operating and managing Docker and Kubernetes, eliminating the need to manually integrate various open‑source technologies to build a container platform and delivering the full software stack required for production environments.

Rancher can run on any Linux host—virtual or physical—in public or private clouds, consuming minimal host resources and treating physical and virtual machines indistinguishably.

It provides portable Docker‑focused infrastructure, including networking, storage, load balancing, DNS, and security, all deployed as Docker containers, enabling deployment on any Linux host across any cloud.

Rancher supports all popular container orchestration and scheduling frameworks—Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, and Mesos—allowing users to create multiple Swarm or Kubernetes clusters and manage applications with the native tools of each framework.

In addition to these frameworks, Rancher includes its own orchestration and scheduling tool called Cattle.

The built‑in application catalog lets users easily deploy applications across multiple container clusters, with automated, painless version upgrades.

Rancher offers flexible user authentication, supporting custom access permissions, and includes built‑in plugins for Active Directory, LDAP, and GitHub; its role‑based access control works consistently in development and production environments.
