OpenHarmony Achieves Initial PC Adaptation, Marking a Step Toward a Domestic Operating System

OpenHarmony, a competitive open‑source operating system, has been successfully adapted to run on PC hardware, supporting basic functions like power control, rendering, peripheral connections, and app execution, though UI integration remains incomplete, marking a significant milestone toward a fully domestic computer OS.

OpenHarmony Achieves Initial PC Adaptation, Marking a Step Toward a Domestic Operating System

In recent years, the "chip shortage and lack of soul" crisis has sounded an alarm for many industries, urging us to accelerate the development of domestic operating system alternatives.

Fortunately, with the rapid growth of the domestic OS market and increased policy investment, Chinese operating systems are making a leap from non‑existence to availability and from merely usable to truly user‑friendly.

At the same time, a number of highly competitive open‑source operating systems have emerged, among which OpenHarmony stands out.

Previously, enthusiasts have already performed preliminary adaptations of OpenHarmony for smartphones such as Xiaomi 6 and OnePlus 6T.

According to the latest news, OpenHarmony has also been successfully adapted to PCs.

Engineers from Honghu Wanlian, a subsidiary of Softtone Power within the Harmony ecosystem, completed an initial PC adaptation of OpenHarmony, based on OpenHarmony 3.2 Beta3 and a specific model of HP office laptop.

Reports indicate that this adaptation supports basic functions such as power on/off, screen rendering, peripheral access, and app execution; drivers for hardware interfaces like USB, Ethernet, SATA, and PCIe are also included, providing performance sufficient for everyday use, though the UI remains unfinished and further work is needed.

The report adds that after the OpenAtom OpenHarmony technology summit, the engineers will release some de‑identified technical details, with a preliminary PC trial version expected to be released later this year.

Of course, turning it into the first domestically produced computer operating system will still require a long journey.

Booting up is just the beginning; software compatibility is only half the battle, and building an ecosystem that invites broad participation is the ultimate goal.

From the release of the Harmony system to its deployment on phones, tablets, and TVs, it has now expanded to the PC platform.

Although still in its early stages, progress must be made step by step; after hardware adaptation, the next focus is building the software ecosystem.
