OpenAI Unveils $25B AI Initiative and Multi‑Year AGI Roadmap

OpenAI announced a corporate restructuring, renaming its nonprofit arm the OpenAI Foundation, which now holds shares in the for‑profit entity valued at roughly $130 billion, making it one of the wealthiest charitable foundations.

The Foundation will initially focus on two areas—health and disease treatment, and technology solutions that enhance AI resilience—with a commitment of $25 billion.

In a livestream, CEO Sam Altman and chief scientist Jakub Pachocki revealed OpenAI’s internal timeline for achieving superintelligence and artificial general intelligence (AGI). Jakub emphasized that AGI will emerge through a multi‑year transition rather than a single moment, and that OpenAI is developing a personalized AGI.

OpenAI aims to create a powerful yet easy‑to‑use platform that makes AI capabilities widely accessible, and plans to launch dedicated AI hardware devices in the coming years.

The company’s strategy is organized around three pillars: Research, Product, and Infrastructure.

OpenAI targets delivering an AI research intern with sufficient capability by September of next year, and a fully autonomous AI researcher capable of completing large‑scale projects by March 2028.

Internally, OpenAI believes that deep‑learning systems could reach superintelligence—systems that surpass human intelligence across many key dimensions—in less than a decade.
