Microsoft intends to introduce hot‑fix style cumulative updates for Windows 11, allowing most monthly updates to install without a reboot while still requiring restarts for quarterly releases, thereby improving update efficiency and security for both consumer and enterprise users.

Microsoft Plans Hotfix Cumulative Updates for Windows 11 to Reduce Restarts

Hotfixes are a popular technique, and Microsoft has long used them in Windows, but the monthly cumulative updates for Windows still require a reboot after installation.

To address the inconvenience and improve the installation rate and efficiency of cumulative updates, Microsoft may release a hot‑fix version of cumulative updates for Windows 11.

According to Windows Central, this hot‑fix approach has already been used on Windows Server and Xbox, though on Windows Server it is limited to Microsoft Azure virtual machines.

Microsoft plans to bring hot‑fix support to all Windows 11 editions, including consumer versions; ideally, the system will automatically receive and install updates without needing a restart.

However, a complete restart‑free experience is not yet possible, so the quarterly cumulative updates in January, April, July, and October (the December update is shifted to January due to the holiday period) will still require a reboot, while updates in other months will not.

This also means that if a critical security issue is discovered, Microsoft can release a hot‑fix update that installs silently, fixing the vulnerability without disrupting users, which is especially beneficial for enterprise customers.

Windows Central reports that Microsoft will bring hot‑fix cumulative updates to Windows 11 on x86‑64 machines in 2024, while the ARM64 version is expected in 2025.
