MEDIA AI Alibaba Entertainment Algorithm Challenge – High‑Precision Video Person Segmentation & Video Temporal Event Detection
The MEDIA AI Alibaba Entertainment Algorithm Challenge, co‑hosted by Alibaba Entertainment Technology and Alibaba Cloud Tianchi, invites researchers and teams to tackle high‑precision video person segmentation and video temporal event detection using large‑scale datasets, with a total prize pool of 380,000 CNY and recruitment opportunities.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly matured over the past decade and is now widely applied across industries, especially in data‑intensive entertainment sectors. In video, AI can analyze content, text, speech, faces, and objects, enabling automated classification, tagging, intelligent review, and production, thereby reducing costs and improving efficiency.
The growing use of AI in video has spurred research topics such as super‑resolution, video object segmentation, and video recommendation. Among these, video object segmentation—precisely separating objects at the pixel level across frames—is one of the most challenging tasks in computer vision due to issues like background interference, low resolution, occlusion, deformation, motion blur, and scale changes.
To bridge academic research and industrial application, Alibaba Entertainment Technology and Alibaba Cloud Tianchi jointly organized the “MEDIA AI Alibaba Entertainment Algorithm Challenge.” The competition offers two tracks:
High‑Precision Video Person Segmentation : Focuses on accurately segmenting human figures, accessories (e.g., gloves, hats), and hand‑held objects, emphasizing semi‑supervised and unsupervised segmentation methods.
Video Temporal Event Detection : Aims to identify and locate specific events within video streams, addressing challenges such as varying backgrounds, lighting, viewpoints, motion speed, and camera cuts.
The challenge provides a platform, large‑scale datasets, and real‑world scenarios to advance state‑of‑the‑art algorithms. It is open to individuals, universities, research institutions, enterprises, and maker teams. In addition to substantial cash prizes, the competition features a panel of distinguished judges from academia and industry, including professors from Zhejiang University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as senior executives from Alibaba.
The prize pool totals 380,000 CNY (190,000 CNY per track), with awards for champion, runner‑up, third place, and several “Geek” awards. Top‑15 teams in the semifinals gain access to Alibaba Entertainment’s campus recruitment channel.
Key dates:
Preliminary round: May 27 – July 20 (UTC+8)
Semifinal round: July 27 – September 4 (UTC+8)
Final round: September (exact date TBD, UTC+8)
Researchers and teams are encouraged to participate and leverage AI to accelerate entertainment development. Detailed dataset information will be released at the Alibaba Cloud Summit on June 9.
