Kubernetes 1.14 Release Brings Production‑Grade Windows Support and Major Enhancements

On March 25, 2019, the open‑source Kubernetes cloud‑native platform announced its 1.14 version, the first major release of the year, marking the transition of many features from alpha to beta and stable GA status.

The release comprises 31 enhancements: 10 stable features, 12 beta features, and 7 brand‑new capabilities, with a focus on scalability and broader workload support.

Key highlights include production‑grade support for Windows Server 2019 nodes, allowing Docker‑based Windows containers to be scheduled on Kubernetes, and the integration of Windows‑specific networking via CNI plugins such as Azure‑CNI, OVN‑Kubernetes, and Flannel.

Significant kubectl improvements were also introduced: a rewritten documentation site using declarative Resource Config, the addition of the -k flag for kustomize, a stabilising plugin mechanism, GA of persistent local volumes, and beta support for PID limits and pod priority/pre‑emption.

Security‑related updates feature hardened RBAC defaults and removal of vulnerable default cluster‑role bindings, driven by recent vulnerability findings.

Project leaders emphasized that the release prioritises stability, clear extension points, and a consistent API lifecycle, aiming to provide a predictable experience for advanced workload orchestration.

Looking ahead, the community plans to extract more extensible components from the core—such as storage, CSI, and networking—while expanding support for additional cloud providers.
