Kevin Kelly on Techno Learning, AI, and the Future of Education

Kevin Kelly, former editor of Wired, delivered a speech at the Dongqian Lake Education Forum in October 2020 discussing how humanity should coexist with AI, the upcoming transformations in education, and introducing a new learning paradigm he calls "Techno Learning."

He highlights that smartphones have existed for less than 5,000 days yet have dramatically altered daily life, suggesting that the next 5,000 days will bring even more profound changes driven by technology.

"Techno Learning" is defined as a crucial skill for both individuals and organizations to enter new domains, focusing on three core abilities: learning how to learn, shifting from answers to questions, and acquiring basic technical knowledge.

Kelly envisions smart glasses and mixed‑reality as the next major technological breakthrough, enabling digital twins, shared virtual/mixed worlds, and immersive, real‑time learning experiences that blend the physical and digital realms.

He argues that future education should prioritize teaching people how to formulate better questions and collaborate with AI, rather than merely seeking answers, because AI will increasingly handle answer‑finding tasks.

Five insights on technology learning are presented: (1) discard old habits to adopt new ones, (2) choose technologies that offer the most options, (3) recognize that all new tech requires maintenance and cost, (4) value enduring older technologies, and (5) give technology space by occasionally stepping away from it.

Kelly predicts AI will become a "god‑assistant," offering real‑time translation and task support, while new job roles such as robot repair specialists and AI collaboration experts will emerge, underscoring the evolving relationship between humans and intelligent machines.
