Interview on Cloud Computing Trends and the Rise of Docker + Kubernetes

In an interview, Xinlai Technology’s CEO/CTO Li Wenqiang, a Tencent Cloud Valuable Professional, warns that high costs, expertise gaps and vendor lock‑in hinder cloud migration, urges multi‑cloud interoperability, praises Docker‑Kubernetes as the catalyst for cloud‑native development, and predicts rapid growth of edge, 5G, IoT and serverless workloads despite current low awareness in China, while highlighting the TVP program’s role in community knowledge sharing.

Interview on Cloud Computing Trends and the Rise of Docker + Kubernetes

Li Wenqiang, CEO/CTO of Xinlai Technology, TVP (Tencent Cloud Valuable Professional) and community leader, shares his views on cloud computing development.

He points out several problems that enterprises face when moving to the cloud:

High cost and entry barriers; not all workloads are suitable for the cloud, and engineers need sufficient knowledge of cloud products.

Without proper cloud‑native architecture and mindset, migration does not automatically bring faster delivery or higher stability.

Fragmented user experience across providers; most users still rely on virtual machines, while documentation for less‑popular services is often incomplete.

Cloud services are isolated from each other, making migration costly and sometimes requiring major architectural changes.

Li argues that cloud computing should become more interoperable and multi‑cloud, allowing users to pick resources from different providers without vendor lock‑in. This would create a vast, shared pool of compute resources that can be elastically allocated.

He then highlights the Docker + Kubernetes combination as a catalyst for the cloud‑native era. Docker provides lightweight, open‑source containers, while Kubernetes offers portability, scalability and self‑healing. Together they solve many challenges that were hard to address in the virtual‑machine era, such as large‑scale distributed deployments, edge computing, and serverless workloads.

Despite the technical merits, adoption in China lags due to low awareness, lack of systematic tutorials, and uneven user experience among cloud vendors. Developers often perceive Docker + K8s as complex and suitable only for large companies.

Looking ahead, Li believes cloud computing will continue to grow rapidly, especially in edge computing driven by 5G and IoT. Serverless and container technologies will become ubiquitous, and eventually every user will become a “developer” with data hosted in the cloud.

He also introduces the TVP program, a Tencent Cloud initiative that connects technical experts with the community, promotes knowledge exchange, and supports activities such as the Cloud+ Community Developer Conference.
