How Sohu News Leveraged HarmonyOS to Boost Mobile App Performance

On August 30, 2025, the “Youth Coding·HarmonyOS Summer” innovation competition (Xiamen station) was held at 104 Guanyinshan Commercial Street, Peeling Sunset Beach. Jia Ding, technical lead of the Web development group, presented “Sohu News HarmonyOS Meta‑Service Scenario Innovation Practice”, providing an in‑depth analysis of Sohu News’ development on HarmonyOS.

Content Analysis

Jia Ding explained three technical breakthroughs of the meta‑service and future plans.

On the home page and cards, the List component and LazyForEach were used for dynamic list loading, reducing hierarchy and improving rendering performance; images use WebP format for efficient loading; list item dimensions are delivered via API with pagination support.

On the detail page, an MVVM architecture supports multiple content templates and integrates audio playback; App Linking is used for deep linking to reactivate users.

On the status page, a Skeleton Screen improves loading experience, and request‑level and global exception handling enhance stability.

Future Plans

Future focus includes expanding HarmonyOS ecosystem capabilities: integrating Push Kit for notifications and subscription messages, adding more basic services such as social sharing, QR‑code scanning, maps, and payments, and continuing to accumulate advanced technologies like RAG to support intelligent, personalized meta‑service evolution.

Jia Ding noted that although meta‑service is only the tip of the iceberg of HarmonyOS products and technologies, the audience’s enthusiasm for Sohu News’ HarmonyOS development experience was moving. He highlighted valuable exchanges with peers, discussions on development details, and insights into the ecosystem’s future, especially in gaming.
