How FAW‑Volkswagen’s DevOps Platform Boosts R&D Efficiency and Drives Digital Transformation

On September 5, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s News Promotion Center and the Beijing Communications Administration co‑hosted the 2023 China International Service Trade Fair’s "Enterprise Digital Transformation Forum" in Beijing, focusing on "Digital Leadership, High‑Quality Development" and gathering officials, researchers, operators, and digital transformation enterprises.

The forum announced the results of the 2023 "Digital Transformation Influence" case collection, which received nearly 100 enterprise submissions across digital leadership, technology, ecosystem, and governance. After expert review, 10 companies were selected as "Leading Enterprises", 5 experts as "Leading Figures", 5 as "Outstanding Experts", and 58 cases as "Innovative Cases".

Among the selected cases, FAW‑Volkswagen’s R&D Efficiency Platform was highlighted as an Innovative Case . The platform, developed entirely by the company’s DevOps team, holds full intellectual property rights and integrates the team’s DevOps understanding, tool mastery, and integration thinking to provide a stable, reliable development foundation.

The platform currently operates five major user‑facing functional modules—Efficiency Measurement, Code Admission, Build & Package, Artifact Management, and Platform Operations—along with comprehensive management functions.

Efficiency Measurement Module

Provides key DevOps data such as daily GitLab activity, code commits, pipeline frequency, code quality, and artifact storage, offering project‑level to individual‑level insights for teams to analyze development status and formulate improvement measures. It also integrates the company’s BI system to deliver transparent, multi‑dimensional dashboards for leadership, development, and operations.

Code Admission Module

Supports three main functions: GitLab‑based repository management, deep integration for automated code merge checks and processes, and self‑service management for routine account activation and other tasks.

Build & Package Module

Handles pipeline configuration, release, and maintenance for all engineering projects, standardizing templates for consistent deployment across the company.

Artifact Management Module

Offers Maven repository management and open‑source software governance, consolidating artifact handling into a single platform and enabling online management of open‑source components to mitigate security risks.

Platform Operations Module

Provides Jira and Confluence user management, platform release information, sentiment feedback, and other daily operational functions through a unified portal, supporting both internal development teams and external ToC applications.

Management Functions

Includes user management, permission management, DevOps platform management, global template management, notification management, project group management, and feedback management, covering seven core modules to support daily operations.

Operational Status

The platform has been integrated into multiple development projects and has become an indispensable, highly relied‑upon support system for the company’s software development.
