How FAW‑Volkswagen Achieved Top‑Tier DevOps Continuous Delivery: Lessons for Enterprises

Domestic and international enterprises have shown that standardization and tool empowerment are key to success; the DevOps standards and the standard‑based continuous delivery pipeline platform can significantly improve quality, efficiency, safety, and agility, enhancing market competitiveness.

The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) has issued the "R&D Operations Integration (DevOps) Capability Maturity Model" series standards, which guide enterprises in implementing DevOps. Companies from banking, securities, insurance, telecom, and internet sectors have participated in CAICT assessments, improving their IT capabilities.

On December 15, 2023, the GOLF+ IT New Governance Leadership Forum was held in Beijing, where CAICT announced the latest batch of DevOps and AIOps standard assessment results.

FAW‑Volkswagen participated with two projects: the OTD – Order Delivery Management Platform and the Volkswagen Brand Dealer Multi‑Function Ecosystem Platform . Both projects passed CAICT’s Level‑3 Continuous Delivery assessment, representing a domestic leading level for the company.

FAW‑Volkswagen is the first automotive company to take part in CAICT’s DevOps standard assessment.

Interview

Dou Hengyan, Director, Management Services Department, FAW‑Volkswagen: FAW‑Volkswagen is a joint venture of China FAW Group, Volkswagen AG, Audi AG, and Volkswagen (China). The OTD platform supports customer‑customized vehicle orders, queries, and tracking, enabling fine‑grained management across order, production, logistics, and sales. The Dealer Ecosystem Platform (MEP) covers the entire dealer business chain, integrating user operations, vehicle purchase, after‑sales, large‑user management, used‑car, rebate calculation, and dealer lifecycle, achieving B2B2C collaborative operation and breaking process barriers between dealers and the OEM.

Guo Cheng, Minister, Corporate IT Development Department: Our in‑house R&D efficiency platform now links requirement, development, testing, build, and release processes, providing automated metric collection and unified visual dashboards. This foundation supports rapid, continuous delivery and improves efficiency through agile iteration, technical debt reduction, and metric‑driven improvement.

Bai Ta, Minister, Corporate IT Security and Service Department: The assessment process was challenging due to cross‑functional coordination. We formed cross‑department teams, clarified responsibilities, and held regular training and review meetings to align understanding of DevOps concepts and drive continuous improvement.

Key performance indicators achieved after the assessment include: automated build success rate >90%, average pipeline duration <10 minutes, automated API test success rate >95%, 100% interface coverage, unit test line coverage >50%, and critical defect repair time <3 hours.

The interview also covered the motivation for joining the assessment, the benefits realized—such as enhanced R&D efficiency, faster delivery, improved quality, and stronger feedback mechanisms—and future plans to extend DevOps practices to data management and infrastructure.
