Global Software Engineer Salary Survey 2022: Rankings by Country, State, City, and Programming Language

CodeSubmit’s 2022 statistical analysis of software engineering salaries in over 20 countries shows that the United States offers the highest average compensation, with Switzerland and Israel close behind. The top‑ten list also includes Denmark, Canada, Norway, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden. China ranks 19th with an average salary of $23,790 per year.

India is a popular outsourcing destination for Western companies, with an average annual salary of $7,725, while Nigeria has the lowest average at $7,255 per year. Overall, software development remains the world’s most sought‑after profession, with the highest demand in Canada, Australia, Russia, Sweden and New Zealand, where talent shortages drive higher wages.

In the United States, the average software developer salary is $110,140 per year ($9,178 per month). Junior developers earn about $69,354 annually, and senior developers about $104,188. The highest‑paying states are California ($146,770) and Washington, and the top‑paying cities are San Jose ($167,420), San Francisco ($158,320) and Seattle ($148,200).

Among programming languages in the U.S., backend languages such as Go and Python command the highest salaries. The ranking is:

In Israel, the average software developer salary is $71,559 per year, with junior developers earning $69,851 and seniors $114,751. The highest‑paying languages are Golang ($109,702) and Python ($83,369), while PHP and Ruby are the lowest‑paid at $64,573 and $64,525 respectively.

Japanese developers average $36,024 annually; iOS developers earn the most, Ruby is second, and SQL and Java are the lowest‑paid languages.

Indian developers average $7,725 per year; Ruby commands the highest salary at $12,372, while Android developers earn the lowest at $5,181.

Overall, across countries, Golang and Ruby tend to be high‑paying languages, whereas JavaScript and PHP are generally lower‑paid.
