The top‑ten list also includes Denmark, Canada, Norway, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden. China ranks 19th with an average salary of $23,790 per year.
India is a popular outsourcing destination for Western companies, with an average annual salary of $7,725, while Nigeria has the lowest average at $7,255 per year. Overall, software development remains the world’s most sought‑after profession, with the highest demand in Canada, Australia, Russia, Sweden and New Zealand, where talent shortages drive higher wages.
In the United States, the average software developer salary is $110,140 per year ($9,178 per month). Junior developers earn about $69,354 annually, and senior developers about $104,188. The highest‑paying states are California ($146,770) and Washington, and the top‑paying cities are San Jose ($167,420), San Francisco ($158,320) and Seattle ($148,200).
