GitLab’s Hardware Policy: Prohibiting Windows and Recommending macOS and Linux Devices

GitLab’s onboarding handbook explicitly bans the use of Microsoft Windows on company devices, requiring employees to use macOS or Linux for security and compliance reasons.

The policy explains that Windows is a primary target for spyware, viruses, and ransomware, and that only Windows Professional licenses would meet GitLab’s standards, while Windows Home does not.

Employees without a company‑issued computer may use personal or rented hardware, but it must also be non‑Windows (Mac, Linux, mobile devices, or a Chromebook).

GitLab lists approved laptop models, including Apple MacBook Pro 13‑, 14‑ and 16‑inch machines with M1/M2 or Intel CPUs, and Dell Precision or Latitude workstations meeting specified CPU, RAM, storage, and display criteria for Linux‑based devices.

The handbook also details the selection criteria used by the security team, emphasizing privacy, compliance, and timely delivery of equipment.

For the full policy, see the GitLab handbook link: GitLab Onboarding Access Requests .
