Fangsheng Open Source Project Wins Awards at ODCC 2020 and Publishes Cloud Data Center Hardware Specification Standards

On September 15, 2020, the Fangsheng open source project was honored with the Excellent Project Award at the ODCC 2020 summit, while senior Alibaba Cloud hardware experts Guo Rui and Fang Haibin received the Excellent Project Manager Award.

The Fangsheng project, launched by Alibaba in November 2019 under the Open Data Center Committee, aims to open Alibaba Cloud’s accumulated data‑center hardware technologies to the industry, establish common standards, and build a collaborative ecosystem for high‑efficiency, low‑cost cloud infrastructure.

Since its inception, the project has published three server hardware specifications—COCI server node, cabinet, and power specifications—and at the summit, senior expert Cao Honghao presented the characteristics of these standards. The COCI server node specification defines dimensions, power, markings, cooling, and safety interfaces, supporting a 19‑inch installation interface and a front‑outlet architecture for improved thermal performance and maintenance.

The COCI cabinet specification details size, power, cabling, load capacity, and interface constraints, introducing a versatile cabinet that supports both front‑ and rear‑outlet configurations. The COCI power specification outlines functional requirements, performance metrics, EMC, safety standards, and reliability criteria tailored to Chinese data‑center environments.

In addition, the project released corresponding test specifications for nodes, cabinets, and power supplies, providing clear test cases, objectives, tools, methods, and criteria to ensure end‑to‑end product quality and high availability.

A compliant storage server prototype was displayed at the summit, demonstrating flexible configuration, strong compatibility, and modular architecture that supports both front‑outlet and traditional rear‑outlet data‑center layouts.

Future plans include continued open‑source development of hardware, operation monitoring, and energy‑efficiency technologies to further advance data‑center infrastructure.
