Enterprise Architecture Environment and Location Diagram with UML/BPMN and Archimate
This article explains how environment and location diagrams depict where applications run, defines headquarters, site, server, workstation, and application components, and illustrates these concepts using UML/BPMN EAP profile and Archimate diagrams, while also providing community links for further architectural discussion.
Environment and location diagrams describe which locations host which applications, determine the technologies used at each location, and show where business users typically interact with the applications, including non‑production environments such as development and pre‑production.
UML/BPMN EAP Profile
Headquarters location : defines the geographic location where enterprise elements (organizational units, hardware, participants, etc.) are deployed.
Site location : defines the geographic location where enterprise elements are deployed; typically an enterprise has one headquarters and several sites.
Server equipment : represents a hardware platform that can connect to other devices and host deployed application components.
Workstation : a workstation connects to the IS via network; application components can be deployed there.
Application : this component corresponds to legacy applications, off‑the‑shelf products, or an assembly of application components.
Interactive application component : represents a top‑level component that manages interaction with external IS users, usually a GUI such as a web interface.
Relationship between two classes : an association has a name and provides role names and cardinalities at each end.
Archimate
Main applications and devices located in Paris
In this diagram, devices (servers, workstations) are embedded into deployed locations, and application components are embedded into the devices.
