Two‑Phase Commit (2PC)

Implementation Details: In the Java ecosystem, JTA (Java Transaction API) implements the XA distributed‑transaction standard; Spring’s JtaTransactionManager can configure distributed transactions by managing multiple ResourceManagers. The transaction manager coordinates with each resource manager, which must support the XA interface for prepare, commit, or rollback phases.

Example: Assume order, product, and promotion data reside in databases D1, D2, and D3. When a user places an order, the application server cluster accesses these databases via Spring. The JTA transaction manager acts as the coordinator, while the databases act as participants to complete the distributed transaction.

Three‑Phase Commit (3PC)

Application Scenario: Fits business processes that can be decomposed into sub‑activities with compensating actions, such as order creation, payment, and inventory deduction in e‑commerce, or hotel and flight reservations in online travel.

Implementation Details: For each business activity, define Try, Confirm, and Cancel operations. Try checks feasibility and reserves resources (e.g., freezes inventory). Confirm performs the actual operation and should be idempotent. Cancel releases the reserved resources when the overall transaction fails.

Example: In a hotel reservation system, Try locks a room, Confirm finalizes the booking, and Cancel releases the lock if the reservation is aborted.

Reliable Message Delivery via Message Queues

Application Scenario: Widely used in high‑concurrency, large‑scale distributed systems such as e‑commerce order processing, payment notifications, inventory updates, or social media push notifications.

Implementation Details: Besides bidirectional acknowledgment, leverage message‑queue features like persistence, idempotent consumption, ordering guarantees, and configure parameters such as expiration time and max retry attempts to handle various failure scenarios.

Example: After an order is created, the order service sends a stock‑deduction message to a queue; the inventory service consumes it, updates stock, and sends an acknowledgment. If failures occur, the queue retries until success or routes the message to a dead‑letter queue for manual handling.

Best‑Effort Notification Mode

Application Scenario: Suitable when strict delivery guarantees are not required and some delay or loss is acceptable, such as marketing message pushes or log data transmission.

Implementation Details: System A retries sending a message at increasing intervals until it receives confirmation from system B or reaches a maximum retry count, using persistent storage and state management to survive restarts.

Example: In an email marketing platform, failed promotional emails are retried according to a back‑off strategy until they succeed or the retry limit is hit, after which failures are logged and notified.

Database Transaction + Compensation Mechanism

Application Scenario: Used when distributed transactions are infeasible but global consistency is still required, such as cross‑service workflows in microservices or integrations with heterogeneous systems.

Implementation Details: Perform local operations within strict database transaction boundaries, and design compensating actions for each potentially failing step to rollback or correct previous changes, monitoring execution status to trigger compensation when needed.

Example: In an e‑commerce payment flow, if updating inventory fails after the order status is set to paid, a compensating transaction rolls back the order status to unpaid and retries or alerts personnel, while notifying the user of the partial success.
