Ctrip OpenStack Shanghai Meetup – Technical Talks on Neutron DVR, SDN, Bare Metal, Mobile Management and Desktop Cloud

On January 31, the OpenStack Shanghai meetup hosted by Ctrip brought together more than 100 OpenStack practitioners from across China for a full day of high‑value technical exchanges.

Neutron Distributed Virtual Router (DVR) – Presented by Gong Yongsheng, who introduced basic Neutron concepts, explained floating IP implementation, and highlighted the key trick of MAC address spoofing that enables traffic reduction, fault tolerance, and congestion avoidance.

SDN and Network Virtualization – Zhang Weifeng discussed the essence of SDN, its four core values, and compared traditional networking with SDN approaches, followed by an analysis of Neutron challenges and four SDN virtualization solutions, including the latest OVN architecture.

OpenStack Upgrade from G to I & Bare Metal – Ctrip engineers Zhang Liang and Chen Yuliang shared the architecture and workflow of Ctrip's Bare Metal provisioning system and detailed four upgrade paths from the G to I release, evaluating their pros and cons.

eBay Large‑Scale OpenStack Management – Jiang Huai described how eBay manages an OpenStack deployment spanning 8 availability zones, 7,000+ hypervisors, 65,000+ VMs, and petabyte‑scale storage, and presented management solutions using Puppet, Foreman, Hiera, and masterless approaches.

Mobile Device Management of OpenStack – Kong Xiangbo showcased existing OpenStack mobile apps, demonstrated API calls from curl to a full iOS app authenticating via Keystone, and announced plans to open‑source a mobile SDK.

Ctrip Desktop Cloud – Cai Feng presented Ctrip's desktop cloud solution, highlighting energy and cost savings, rapid recovery after power loss, intelligent resource pooling, and solutions to challenges such as CPU over‑commit, QEMU bugs, and Windows clock issues.

The event concluded with a strong community spirit, networking among nearly a hundred participants, and a hiring drive for OpenStack senior engineers, architects, and DevOps roles.
