City Big Data Applications and the 2019 Big Data Industry Summit White Paper

City big data applications differ from those in other industries and fields, featuring a distinct "urbanization" characteristic. They focus on balancing the core relationship among people, cities, and the environment, guided by the principles of innovation, openness, coordination, greenness, and sharing.

With the advent of the big data era, the concept of city big data has attracted widespread attention. Its unique urban characteristics set it apart from other sectoral big data uses.

In the construction of smart cities, city big data serves as a technical guarantee. Smart cities leverage next‑generation information technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data, and geographic information integration to promote intelligent planning, construction, management, and services, thereby generating massive data streams.

Big data has become the engine of smart city development. However, many cities still face challenges such as persistent "information silos," uneven regional digital capabilities, fragmented government and city data management, difficult inter‑departmental coordination, insufficient professional expertise, and a shortage of talent.

The upcoming 2019 Big Data Industry Summit (June 4) will release the "City Big Data Platform White Paper." The white paper, jointly authored by the China Academy of ICT’s Cloud Computing and Big Data Institute, the Industry and Planning Research Institute, and leading enterprises, outlines the evolution of city big data, defines its concepts and connotations, analyzes its domestic and international development status, and discusses future difficulties and challenges.

Based on this analysis, the white paper proposes a technical architecture for city big data platforms, clarifies operational models and safeguard measures, and provides detailed case studies of city big data applications in China, offering valuable reference for stakeholders interested in platform construction and usage.
