China Agricultural Bank’s DevOps & AIOps Success: Key Lessons for Enterprises

ABC also passed the "Cloud Computing Intelligent Operations (AIOps) Capability Maturity Model" assessment.

To date, ABC has passed 17 CAICT DevOps standard assessments: 12 for continuous delivery, 1 for application design, and 4 for security and risk management.

Zhao Yundong, Chief Engineer of ABC R&D Center, explained that the center supports the bank’s digital construction and fintech innovation across retail, corporate, investment banking, fund management, leasing, asset management, and insurance, serving over 800 million customers worldwide.

ABC achieved notable results in four DevOps domains across ten projects, including continuous delivery, security control, application design, and intelligent operations. Six projects passed the DevOps continuous delivery Level 3 assessment, two projects passed DevSecOps Level 2, one project achieved Level 3 in application design, and the AIOps platform received an excellent‑level assessment.

Zhao expressed honor and gratitude to CAICT, noting that the assessments provided concrete improvement directions and validated the bank’s organizational‑level capabilities in continuous delivery, security, application design, and intelligent operations.

Q: Why were these particular domains chosen for assessment?

Since 2019, ABC has built a DevOps foundation, expanded to DevSecOps, application design, and AIOps, and participated in assessments to verify outcomes. The bank integrates DevOps principles—small‑batch delivery, cross‑functional teams, and pipeline automation—into its digital product innovation mechanism.

Q: What challenges were encountered during the assessments?

Wang Liqiang, Senior Expert, identified challenges such as cross‑department coordination across 20 departments, toolchain localization, metric system construction, standard interpretation, and pandemic‑related remote collaboration. The team addressed these by forming flexible work groups, holding regular meetings, and conducting thorough problem‑solving sessions.

The assessments confirmed the value of DevOps, and ABC plans to adopt new standards such as agile development management and continuous testing, further deepen DevOps practices, optimize tools, processes, and data visualization, and cultivate internal DevOps talent.

DevOps Capability Maturity Model

The "R&D Operations Integration (DevOps) Capability Maturity Model" was jointly developed by CAICT, the Cloud Computing Open Source Industry Alliance, the Efficient Operations Community, major internet companies, and leading financial and telecom enterprises. It is the most comprehensive and authoritative DevOps standard, recognized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and adopted by many enterprises.

The model covers processes (agile development management, continuous delivery, technical operations), application design, security and risk management, systems and tools, business value management, collaborative development and operations, and continuous testing.
