Big Data Prediction Practices: Baidu Technology Salon #53
At Baidu’s Technology Salon #53 on August 16, a near‑full audience heard data scientist Shen Zhiyong explain the origins of Baidu’s tourist‑flow prediction tool and Liu Ying discuss the evolution of social‑economic forecasting from classic “beer‑and‑diapers” models to modern big‑data analytics, followed by an interactive Q&A and prize‑giving session.
On the afternoon of August 16th, at the Garage Cafe in the Internet Incubator, we welcomed the 53rd session of the Baidu Technology Salon, focusing on "Prediction Practices Based on Big Data." This event featured two distinguished speakers: Shen Zhiyong, a data scientist from Baidu Research Institute's Big Data Laboratory, and Liu Ying, a lecturer from the School of Management at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Due to strict registration limits to ensure quality, the venue, which can accommodate nearly 200 people, was nearly full an hour before the event began, demonstrating the strong interest in the "big data prediction" topic.
Shen Zhiyong presented on "Big Data and Prediction," revealing that the inspiration for the popular "Baidu Prediction of Tourist Flow and Comfort Level" product came from a question posed by Premier Wen Jiabao during his visit to Baidu years ago: "How many people will be at the Forbidden City tomorrow?" The audience actively engaged through a WeChat screen, sharing their thoughts on the speakers' presentations.
After a short break, Liu Ying delivered a talk on social and economic prediction analysis based on internet data. She traced the evolution of such predictions from the classic "beer and diapers" example to the current era of big data analysis.
Following the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to ask questions during the OpenSpace segment, where they could engage in close discussions with the guest speakers. Topics such as the potential of big data in financial markets were particularly popular.
The event concluded with group photos and acknowledgments of the speakers and audience members who won prizes during the OpenSpace segment. For those who missed the event, the Baidu Technology Salon official website and social media channels provide access to the presentations and further information.
