Baidu AI Revenue Jumps 49% in Q1, Robotaxi Hits Break‑Even Milestone

For years, the common perception of Baidu’s AI efforts was that they were costly experiments—large‑model training, AI cloud services, and autonomous‑driving projects were seen as money‑burning endeavors with little commercial return.

In the first quarter, Baidu reported that core AI business revenue reached 136 billion yuan, a year‑over‑year increase of 49%, marking the first time AI revenue surpassed half of the company’s overall non‑AI revenue. AI cloud infrastructure revenue grew to 88 billion yuan, up 79%, while GPU cloud revenue surged 184% year over year. The robotaxi service “Luobo Kuaipao” also set new records. In Q1 it completed 3.2 million fully driverless orders, with a weekly peak of over 350 000 orders in March and a cumulative total of more than 22 million trips. Management disclosed that the service has achieved break‑even on a unit‑economics basis in China’s largest operating city, a significant milestone even though it does not yet cover all R&D, management, and headquarters costs.
