In March 2023, the 48th Optical Fiber Conference (OFC) gathered over ten thousand experts, scholars, enterprises and government representatives in San Diego, USA, to discuss hot topics such as open disaggregation, data‑center optical interconnect, photonic integration, 5G, space optical communication, quantum networking, artificial intelligence and network analytics.

Alibaba Cloud’s technical experts shared the latest advances in switch and optical‑layer architecture, ecosystem control, hardware‑software co‑design, and fiber‑chip integration, demonstrating the company’s experience in R&D and operation of intelligent, white‑box networking.

The original paper “Improved QoT Estimations through Refined Signal Power Measurements in a Disaggregated and Partially‑loaded Live Production Network” described Alibaba Cloud’s open optical network for cloud data‑center interconnect, introducing breakthroughs in network data models, heterogeneous optical layers, and cloud‑native control platforms, achieving sub‑0.5 dB standard deviation in performance estimation across more than 800,000 real‑world samples.

Another paper, “Multimode Fiber Bandwidth Uniformity and its Impact on Optical Links in Hyperscale Datacenters,” revealed the importance of multimode fiber bandwidth uniformity for the evolution from 100 G to 400 G links, enabling lower cost, lower power, higher reliability and higher bandwidth services.

In “Supporting Bandwidth Guarantee for a Fast Optical Switching Network with Micro Buffer Switching Fabric,” Alibaba Cloud introduced a novel micro‑buffer‑based fast optical switching architecture (MFOS) that significantly increases throughput, reduces average latency, and provides bandwidth guarantees independent of competing traffic, supporting latency‑sensitive applications.

During the data‑center summit, a keynote titled “Past Experiences and Future Prospects of Data Center Interconnect Optical Networks” highlighted a decade of cloud data‑center optical network innovations in open disaggregation, system optimization, programmability and automation, and outlined future needs for intelligent, real‑time reconfigurable, high‑capacity, and open‑ended network designs.

In the panel “Slow and Wide Versus Fast and Narrow: How Do We Make our Datacenters Green?” Dr. Liang Di discussed the advantages of dense‑WDM and silicon photonics for reducing power and cost in high‑bandwidth data‑center communications.

Researchers Yao Zhiping and Fu Binzhang presented on future data‑center network architectures and pooled high‑performance networking, emphasizing hardware‑software co‑development and the role of optics.

The article concludes that, despite global economic pressures, focused R&D and innovative optical technologies are essential for driving economic recovery and sustainable growth, and Alibaba Cloud remains committed to leading cloud‑computing innovation across hardware, software, systems and chips.
