QA’s value is often questioned, but by applying the simple AIMA (Analysis, Impact, Measurement, Presentation) four‑step approach, QA work can be focused on quality indicators that are tied to team and project outcomes, thereby increasing performance and demonstrating value.

The AIMA acronym originates from Portuguese terms: Análise (Analysis), Impacto (Impact), Metrificação (Measurement), and Apresentação (Presentation). As more companies adopt KPI‑based software quality measurement, QA analysts gain opportunities to contribute strategically.

When QA operates in teams without clearly defined quality processes, two key questions should be asked: “How will you add value to the team?” and “What activities will you undertake?” The answer typically involves understanding context and identifying improvement points based on data.

1. Analysis – Gather as much information as possible, take notes, and observe interactions (meetings, ceremonies) to spot improvement opportunities. Pair‑programming can accelerate understanding of the technology stack.

2. Impact – Target the most visible, high‑impact problems that cause frequent rework. Guide actions by building trust, basing decisions on end‑user experience, discussing relevant KPIs, and aligning with stakeholders when needed.

3. Measurement – Measure what matters; without metrics, improvement is impossible. Typical metrics include code coverage, defects found in production, and cyclomatic complexity. Metrics provide evidence of reliability and inform strategic decisions.

4. Presentation – Use the predefined indicators to showcase results, demonstrate the impact of the QA activities over a time frame, and share lessons learned for the next cycle.
