5G-Enabled Advanced Video Content: Ultra‑HD, Immersive, and Interactive Technologies

5G introduces new characteristics such as massive bandwidth, ultra‑low latency, massive connectivity, edge nodes, and network slicing. These enable new business forms ranging from ultra‑high‑definition (UHD) to VR/AR, stereoscopic video, and cloud‑edge collaborative computing, representing a new AI‑driven paradigm and various customized transmission services.

These new features aim to achieve three goals: better user experience, interactive content forms, and innovative business models.

At the 2019 Qingdao International Film Expo, Alibaba Entertainment senior algorithm expert Zhang Tianruo shared Youku’s technical considerations under 5G, focusing on ultra‑high‑definition, immersive, and interactive video exploration and practice.

1. Three Scenario Transformations of Ultra‑HD Video

In the 5G era, UHD metrics improve across the board, affecting different content types in distinct ways:

1) Premium movies and series aim for extreme quality to increase viewing time and payment willingness. 2) User‑generated content (UGC) such as VLOGs and short videos rely on mobile devices; 5G uplink bandwidth and edge AI greatly enhance the experience. 3) Live streaming benefits from higher uplink bandwidth, enabling multi‑camera, multi‑angle feeds and professional‑grade remote production.

Additionally, legacy 4G/SD content faces a renewal challenge: classic videos need restoration to meet 5G‑era quality, a process Youku calls “old‑film rejuvenation.”

Example: the 2006 drama Soldier Assault shows noticeable quality gaps compared to modern productions. After rejuvenation, playback duration and user comments increased, confirming audience demand for higher video quality in the 5G era.

2. Immersive Video – Bandwidth‑Saving Innovations for VR

Youku has a long history with VR. Early VR focused on efficient transmission under limited bandwidth, using techniques such as symmetric mapping, asymmetric multi‑stream mapping, and multi‑tile double‑resolution schemes.

With 5G, the paradigm shifts: cloud‑VR leverages low latency to render scenes in the cloud, sending only the user’s viewport as a 2D video stream, dramatically reducing the “last‑mile” bandwidth requirement.

3. Four Exploration Directions for Interactive Video

Unlike traditional one‑way playback, mobile video allows users to interact within a centimeter of the screen. Four interaction models are identified:

1) Mature solutions: likes, bullet comments, and reviews enrich video with UGC text.

2) Interactive dramas: 5G enables branching storylines where viewers choose plot paths and re‑watch different outcomes.

3) Spatial exploration: multi‑stream, multi‑view, multi‑screen, and multi‑studio productions provide personalized content combinations at each moment.

4) 3D‑oriented video: VR/AR, holographic, and 360° video transform the content from 2D to 3D interaction, surpassing previous VR limitations.

The result is “6DoF video,” where hands, feet, and eyes can move, offering full scene depth and user‑controlled viewpoints.

Examples from Youku include dance‑training videos, basketball replay analysis, and other use cases that add angle‑specific details and overlay external information.

Ultimately, the video consumption battlefield shifts from the living‑room TV to a multi‑screen ecosystem, with personalized content delivered to phones, tablets, and TVs, fostering richer connections among household members.
