2023 Bilibili Technology Patent Selections – Overview of Ten Awarded Projects

April 26, 2023 marked the 23rd World Intellectual Property Day and the national Intellectual Property Awareness Week in China. During this period, Bilibili organized an internal voting activity to select the top ten technical patents of 2023.

The following ten projects were recognized for their innovative contributions to the platform:

1. UP Creator Video Notes A method to display creator‑generated notes directly on the video screen, allowing users to efficiently view annotations without diverting attention from the video, thereby improving the viewing experience.

2. Personalized Recommendation Danmaku Danmaku (bullet‑screen) comments are evaluated by a model, stored in a retrieval pool, and then filtered by user‑specific video identifiers and timestamps. The system can recommend personalized danmaku at billion‑scale data volumes with high concurrency and low latency, enhancing interaction quality.

3. Video Hotness Prediction Using playback feature data from the current time slice, a machine‑learning model combined with statistical methods predicts a video’s hotness score and forecasts future popularity.

4. Live Highlight Moments By weighting live chat and gift data, the system identifies high‑light moments in live streams, enabling rapid generation of highlight clips for secondary creation.

5. Mobile Program Observability Real‑time interception of runtime information with built‑in code templates validates execution data, lowering the barrier for white‑box testing and reducing maintenance costs.

6. Live Audio‑Video Sync Detection In live streaming, time‑varying metadata is overlaid on audio and video streams; the client extracts and matches this information to calculate actual audio‑video latency.

7. Video Script Generation for Creative Materials Frames are sampled periodically, tokenized, and matched against keywords to generate labeled image or video assets, helping creators quickly locate suitable materials.

8. Anti‑Occlusion Danmaku During playback, the system detects target object regions, creates mask images, and composites them with danmaku to prevent comments from covering important visual elements.

9. Cloud Gaming Force Feedback State data from a cloud‑gaming controller on the first device is sent to a second device, which generates force‑feedback signals and returns them to the first device, enhancing the tactile experience of cloud gaming.

10. Playback Synchronization SEI (Supplemental Enhancement Information) packets carrying business timestamps are embedded in the video stream. The client matches these timestamps with a business cache to display synchronized business information alongside the video.

These patents reflect Bilibili’s commitment to fostering a strong technical culture and encouraging innovation among its employees.
