2022 Top 8 Programming Languages by Developer Job Demand

DevJobsScanner analyzed more than 12 million developer job postings from October 2021 to November 2022, selecting positions that explicitly required a programming language, and identified the eight most popular languages in 2022.

1. JavaScript / TypeScript

JavaScript remains the most demanded language, accounting for about 31% of jobs requiring a specific language; TypeScript’s rise further boosts this share. Keywords: javascript, typescript, react, angular, vue, node. Jobs Found: 801K (~31%).

2. Python

Python is the second‑most demanded language, valued for its versatility from scripting to server‑side and data analysis. Keywords: python, django, flask. Jobs Found: 515K (~20%).

3. Java

Java ranks third, still popular despite newer alternatives like Kotlin. Keywords: java, spring. Jobs Found: 443K (~17%).

4. C#

C# is a general‑purpose, object‑oriented language often used with the .NET framework and Unity for game development. Keywords: c#, .net. Jobs Found: 305K (~12%).

5. PHP

PHP, created 27 years ago, remains the fifth‑most demanded language, with a near‑doubling share from ~5% to ~10% over the period. Keywords: php, laravel, wordpress. Jobs Found: 226K (~9%).

6. C / C++

C and C++ retain strong demand across many domains such as games, servers, databases, and even space probes. Keywords: c, c++. Jobs Found: 213K (~8%).

7. Ruby

Ruby, often used with Ruby on Rails, accounts for about 5% of demand. Keywords: ruby, ruby on rails. Jobs Found: 125K (~5%).

8. Go

Go, created by Google 12 years ago, is growing steadily and may enter the top five by 2023. Keywords: go. Jobs Found: 53K (~2%).

Conclusion

JavaScript/TypeScript dominate the market, representing 31% of language‑specific jobs—roughly one in three positions. Python and Java follow, with Java narrowing the gap to Python. C#, C/C++, and PHP show consistent upward trends.
