2022 Java Ecosystem Report Highlights: Java 11 Adoption, Vendor Market Share, and Containerization Trends
The New Relic 2022 Java Ecosystem Report reveals that while Java 8 still dominates many production environments, Java 11 usage has surged past 48%, vendor market shares have shifted dramatically with Oracle falling to 34.48% and Amazon rising to 22%, and over 70% of Java applications are now running in containers.
New Relic recently released the “2022 Java Ecosystem Report”, offering a comprehensive view of the current state of the Java ecosystem based on performance data from millions of applications.
The report shows that as of March 2020, Java 8 still accounted for a massive 84.48% of applications, but the trend is rapidly changing as developers migrate to newer versions.
Data indicates that more than 48% of production applications now run on Java 11, while Java 8’s share has dropped to 46.45%.
Java 17 usage remains modest but has already surpassed Java 6, 10, and 16; support for Java 7 is expected to end in 2022, though 1.71% of applications still use it, and a small 0.27% continue to run on the EOL Java 6.
Non‑LTS Java versions see very low adoption, only 2.7% of applications, with Java 14 being the most popular among them.
On the vendor side, Oracle’s dominance has halved to 34.48% of users, while Amazon’s share has surged to 22%; other notable vendors include Eclipse Adoptium (11.48%), Azul Systems (8.17%), Red Hat (6%), and IcedTea (5.38%).
Containerization has become mainstream, with more than 70% of the surveyed Java applications running inside containers.
