2022 Global AI Technology Innovation Competition – Algorithm Challenge: Connecting AI with E‑commerce
The 2022 Global AI Technology Innovation Competition – Algorithm Challenge, co‑hosted by JD Retail and academic partners, brought together 12 finalist teams from over 3,000 entrants to tackle e‑commerce‑focused AI problems such as multimodal image‑text matching and product‑title entity recognition, highlighting real‑world business impact and fostering talent exchange.
Recently, JD Retail, together with the China Association for Artificial Intelligence, Yuhang District Government, and Hangzhou Future Sci‑Tech City Management Committee, announced the progress of the 2022 Global AI Technology Innovation Competition – Algorithm Challenge. After registration, preliminaries, and semifinals, 12 teams emerged from more than 3,000 participants to enter the finals.
The competition, launched on February 25, attracted top AI students and developers from leading institutions worldwide, including Tsinghua University, Fudan University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the University of Toronto, with a million‑yuan prize for the winners.
Two tracks were set: “Image‑Text Matching of Key E‑commerce Attributes” (Track 1) and “Product Title Entity Recognition” (Track 2). Participants built AI models to improve business accuracy in JD Retail’s e‑commerce ecosystem.
Organizers emphasized the need for strong business awareness, urging contestants to integrate real‑world retail problems into their algorithms, thereby fostering deeper collaboration between JD Retail’s technology team and young developers.
Track 1 focuses on multimodal techniques to ensure consistency between product images and titles, enabling precise matching, automated content review, and the creation of a universal visual‑language model for broader e‑commerce applications.
Track 2 involves comprehensive NLP methods—lexical, syntactic, and semantic analysis, vector representations, deep learning, pre‑training, transfer learning, and knowledge integration—to extract key entities from product titles, supporting knowledge‑graph construction and enhancing search and recommendation performance.
Interviews with finalists highlighted cross‑border teamwork, such as a team split between Toronto and China coordinating code development across a 12‑hour time difference, and seasoned participants leveraging experience from numerous national AI contests.
JD Group executives, including Vice President Yan Weipeng and Vice President Bao Yongjun, expressed confidence in the young algorithm developers’ innovative potential and encouraged them to continue advancing their solutions in the finals.
JD Retail’s AI technology, embedded throughout its massive real‑world market operations, powers billions of consumer interactions, drives massive inventory turnover, and supports rapid nationwide delivery, illustrating the pervasive role of AI in modern e‑commerce.
