2020 China Independent Developer Survival Survey Report
This report analyzes the 2020 Chinese independent developer landscape based on 590 questionnaires and interviews, revealing their demographics, distribution, gender imbalance, income levels, work habits, challenges, and the support they need to thrive as freelancers or small‑team creators.
Introduction
Independent developers are freelancers who handle product ideation, design, development, promotion, and monetization on their own, often working alone or in small teams of up to three people.
Methodology
The findings are derived from 590 survey responses (including 560 gender data points and 510 web‑framework usage data) and dozens of in‑depth interviews.
Main Findings
Geographic Distribution
Developers are concentrated in economically strong provinces such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Zhejiang, while regions like Xinjiang, Tibet, and Qinghai have almost none.
Gender
Male developers dominate the sample, with women representing a negligible proportion despite their presence.
Professional Background
More than half of developers are employed full‑time elsewhere and develop independently as a side activity; about one‑third are full‑time independent developers.
Support Needs
Traffic acquisition is the most urgent need, followed by cash and experience; server services and development tools are rarely requested.
Income
44.1% earn ≤1k CNY per month, while the 5k‑10k segment is the largest among higher earners (24.1%). Lack of product‑operation skills is a key barrier to higher income.
Experience and Time Commitment
37.3% have <1 year of independent development experience, 44.1% have 1‑3 years, and most work less than 28 hours per week.
Challenges
Key difficulties include irregular life patterns, insufficient UI design skills, growth hurdles, and income instability.
Recommendations
Choose projects wisely, maintain passion, adopt a "first‑complete‑then‑perfect" mindset, consider small teams, and focus on a single domain to increase chances of success.
