2019 Big Data Industry Summit Highlights and Outcomes

From June 4‑5, 2019, the China‑hosted Big Data Industry Summit gathered more than 4,000 attendees and 60,000 online viewers to present award winners, release multiple whitepapers and standards, and hold six thematic forums and two roundtables that examined data platforms, asset management, security, law, and emerging technologies, outlining current opportunities and future challenges for big‑data growth.

2019 Big Data Industry Summit Highlights and Outcomes

On June 5, after two days of intensive discussions and exchanges, the 2019 Big Data Industry Summit—hosted by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and the China Communications Standards Association, organized by the Big Data Technology Standards Promotion Committee and co‑organized by China IDC Circle—concluded successfully.

The summit featured the release of several big‑data research results and whitepapers by CAICT, the announcement of the "2019 Big Data Galaxy Award" winners, and six thematic forums that together identified current opportunities and challenges for big‑data development while offering constructive suggestions for its future growth.

On the morning of June 4 at 9:00 a.m., the summit officially opened, chaired by CAICT Vice President Wang Zhiqin. The opening ceremony featured speeches by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Chief Economist Wang Xinzhe, China Communications Standards Association Chairman Xi Guohua, as well as leaders from China Telecom Tianyi Cloud, Unicom Big Data, NumberDream, Ping An Smart City and other companies.

The event attracted broad attention in the big‑data field, with more than 4,000 on‑site participants and over 60,000 online viewers.

Data Middle Platform Roundtable

The summit set up two roundtables: “Data Middle Platform” and “Data Asset Management”. The Data Middle Platform forum explored core capabilities, key construction elements, application scenarios and suitable enterprise types. Participants included Liu Xianrong (ICBC Data Management Dept), Wang Zhijun (China Unicom Information Dept), Li Kefeng (JD.com), and Qiu Yi (WeBank).

Data Asset Management Roundtable

The Data Asset Management forum focused on practical experiences and challenges, with speakers Kyle Morton (CMMI Global Business Development), Song Yulun (Unicom Big Data CTO), Zhang Xu (JD Digital Technology Big Data Dept), Zhang Haifeng (NumberDream), and Zhou Quan (Ant Data Platform) discussing key steps from theory to practice.

Galaxy Award Trophy

The "Galaxy Award" winners were announced at the summit. The 2019 Big Data Galaxy Award received 306 submissions, resulting in 25 Best Awards and 53 Excellent Awards.

Several whitepapers and standards were released, including the "Data Asset Management Practice Whitepaper 4.0", "In‑Memory Database Whitepaper", "Relational Cloud Database Application Whitepaper", "City Big Data Platform Whitepaper", "Trusted Data Service Series Standards", and the "Secure Multi‑Party Computation Data Flow Product Standard".

On June 5, six sub‑forums were held: Big Data Frontier Technology, Government & City Big Data, Data Flow Technology & Law, Big Data Security, Distributed Database Technology & Key Industry Applications, and Data Asset Management.

Big Data Frontier Technology Forum

The Frontier Technology forum began with the award ceremony for the Excellent Big Data Product. Speakers included Alibaba product expert Guo Hua, Xinghuan Information Technology R&D Manager Ji Qianfei, Unicom Big Data Senior Technical Director Li Dazhong, Dongfang Jin‑Xin Data Institute Director Fu Wei, Baidu senior R&D engineer Chen Kai, and CAICT Cloud Computing & Big Data Research Institute engineer Wang Miaoqiong, who also presented an in‑depth analysis of the eighth batch of big‑data product capability assessments.

Big Data Security Forum

The Security forum addressed the growing concerns of data over‑collection and leakage, discussing industry‑specific security issues and future trends. Speakers included senior researcher Hong Yanqing (Peking University), Deputy Director Chen Tian (CAICT Security Department), Deputy Director Liao Xuan (CAICT Security Department), Committee Chair Ning Yi (Health Information Security Committee), professor Jin Tao (Tsinghua University), director Xu Ke (University of International Business and Economics), and security experts from China Telecom Cloud Computing and CAICT.

Government & City Big Data Forum

Under the influence of IoT, AI, cloud computing and 5G, big data is flourishing across industries and becoming a cornerstone of smart city construction. The forum featured speakers from Peking University E‑Government Institute, CAICT, China Telecom Cloud, and others, and included the release and detailed interpretation of the "City Big Data Platform Whitepaper".

Data Flow Technology & Law Forum

The forum examined trust and order in data circulation, focusing on rights, quality, compliance, and safety. Speakers from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences University, CAICT Policy & Economic Research Institute, Baidu, Ant Financial, Tencent Cloud, and others discussed secure multi‑party computation and related standards.

Data Asset Management Forum

Recognizing data as an asset, the forum highlighted the distinct challenges of data‑asset management. CAICT engineer Li Yufei interpreted the "Data Asset Management Practice Whitepaper 4.0". Speakers from State Grid, China Mobile, China Everbright, Dongfang Jin‑Xin, and Datablau shared pain points and best practices, and the Excellent Data Asset Management Practice award was presented.

Distributed Database Technology & Key Industry Applications Forum

The forum addressed the inevitable shift from centralized to distributed database systems in finance, telecom and other key sectors, discussing strict regulatory policies, high technical thresholds, and lack of international experience. Speakers from CAICT, China Merchants Bank, Beijing Bank, China Minsheng Bank, Zhejiang NetEase Bank, and WeBank shared practical experiences.

After the six main forums, a regional big‑data development experience symposium was held, inviting officials from the Cyberspace Administration, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and senior executives from provinces such as Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shandong, Guizhou, Guangxi, Yunnan, Gansu, and Tibet. Topics included open government data resources, data integration and sharing, data governance and asset management, and data security protection.
